Building Better, Lighter and Faster: How EPS Geofoam is Reshaping Singapore’s Infrastructure
Geofoam for Luxury Leisure Projects in Singapore
In September 2024, the newly opened bathhouse at Dempsey, designed as a sanctuary for relaxation, showcased an unusual but highly effective engineering solution — geofoam. Jebsen & Jessen Packaging supplied 340 m³ of ASTM-standard geofoam to create its interior façade system during the additions and alterations works. This not only allowed designers to reduce or add to the structure’s load as required but also maintained the aesthetic ambitions of the project.
EPS Geofoam in Transport Infrastructure
The same geofoam innovation is shaping large-scale infrastructure. At the Sengkang Punggol Light Rapid Transit Depot, which began in November 2022, 81,000 m³ of geofoam was used as backfill to raise floor height and continue building works without adding excessive weight to the structure.
Meanwhile, for the Land Transport Authority’s Changi East Depot for the Cross-Island Line, starting January 2024, around 30,000 m³ of geofoam is being used to form a double slab for the main workshop and water retention building.
Why Geofoam are Changing Construction
All three projects share the same objective: minimising bearing load issues while accelerating installation. Jebsen & Jessen Packaging is the only supplier in Singapore and Malaysia offering ASTM-standard geofoam with full test results and engineered performance tailored to meet demanding engineering specifications. Beyond supply, the company provides technical support to professional engineers, delivers on-site training in cutting techniques and even recycles EPS waste.
Future Potential of Geofoam in Singapore
This approach not only solves immediate engineering challenges but also positions Jebsen & Jessen Packaging as a trusted partner for future projects. With plans to explore geofoam as part of floating materials for renewable energy, the potential for innovation extends far beyond construction.
From a stylish urban retreat to critical transport infrastructure, Jebsen & Jessen Packaging’s work proves that the right materials combined with deep expertise can deliver solutions that are lighter, faster and smarter — shaping a more sustainable future for Singapore’s built environment.
